Su Chang is a young zheng virtuoso and currently a lecturer at the Central Conservatory of Music, China. She was named one of the “‘New Top Ten Zheng Virtuosi” by CCTV.
Su began her training in zheng at the age of six under Yun Changping, then under the famous zheng teacher and virtuoso, Zhou Wang, from 1996 onwards. More recently, she has given solo recitals and talks at the Cambridge University in the UK, and the Columbia University and the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, USA. In 2002, she won the Gold Award – Junior Specialism Section at both the ‘Longyin Cup’ International Competition and the first Ethnic Instrumental Solo Competition. These were followed by another Gold Award at the CCTV Ethnic Instrumental Competition – Plucked-string Section in 2007, and the championship at the 2011 YouTube Symphony Orchestra Competition for soloists. She completed her undergraduate programme at the Central Conservatory of Music ahead of the prescribed term in 2012, and joined the faculty there.
Su has toured over 40 cities in China and over 30 countries around the world. Orchestras that she has collaborated with include the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra, China National Opera House, China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Sinfonietta, the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of the UK, German Mannheim National Opera Orchestra, Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Swiss Youth Symphony Orchestra etc.
She has recorded for films, television dramas and full-length dance dramas. The titles include Liu Ru Shi composed by Wang Danhong; The Emperor’s Harem, Anecdotes about Spirits and Immortals, The Myth of Nuwa and Sacred Beads, and When Women Ruled the World by Lin Hai; the dance epic Song of the Wind and Carefree Excursions.
