Kung Ka Ho

Principal Daruan of the Hong Kong Young Chinese Orchestra, Kung joined the orchestra in 2018. Born in Hong Kong, he began studying zhongruan with Sebastien Lai Ka-tai at the age of 13 and has been guided by zhongruan performer and composer Liu Xing and zhongruan soloist Pan I-Tung. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) Degree from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he majored in the ruan under the tutelage of Sebastien Lai Ka-tai, with a minor in yueqin under the guidance of Professor Lui Kwan-on. In 2023, he was awarded the Music and Dance Fund Scholarship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and is currently pursuing a Master of Music programme, majoring in ruan under the mentorship of Professor Lui Kwan-on.

In 2019, he participated in the Young Music Makers competition organised by Radio Television Hong Kong and was awarded the Cecil Leong Scholarship to support his undergraduate studies at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. At age 19, he won a gold award in the Advanced Professional category (ruan) at the Nanyang International Music Competition and received a degree scholarship from First Initiatives Foundation. In 2020, he founded the fusion quintet ‘Sync 5’ together with four young musicians, who play a range of Chinese and Western instruments including the erhu, ruan, cello, recorder, harmonica and melodica.

Kung is currently a freelance musician with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, with whom he has undertaken concert tours in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Xi’an and Jinan. He has also served as a freelance musician with the Macau Chinese Orchestra, and is currently a member of the ‘Sync 5’ quintet and the Hong Kong Young Chinese Orchestra. In recent years, he has hosted several radio shows and currently hosts the RTHK Radio 4 Programme R4 Music Academy, which aims to broaden interest in Classical and Chinese music.
