Chan Yu Chun

Principal Erhu of the Hong Kong Young Chinese Orchestra, Chan joined the orchestra in 2015 and became Principal Erhu in 2019. A pupil of Zhang Chongxue, Chan has represented the orchestra by performing solos at numerous concerts in venues of all sizes and is a recipient of the Chow Fan-fu Music Scholarship.


An active participant in young orchestra events, Chan joined the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra (managed by the Music Office under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department) as gaohu player in 2018, performing in a variety of venues and traveling with the orchestra to give a performance in Xi’an. In 2022, Chan joined the Chinese orchestra of the Junior Music Programme of The Hong Kong Academy for Arts, and in the same year began rehearsing and performing with the Academy Chinese Orchestra. In 2023, Chan traveled to Taiwan to perform in the Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival.


In 2018, Chan enrolled in the Diocesan Boys’ School, serving as the President and Principal Erhu of the school’s Chinese orchestra in the 2022-23 school year. During his studies, Chan was named a champion soloist and won gold in ensemble performance (middle school division) at the Hong Kong Schools Festival, was twice selected to perform as champion, and received the Grantham Scholarships Fund. The same year, Chan was awarded gold in the orchestra category at both the Nanyang International Music Competition and Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows, and performed the erhu ensemble Chant on Strings at his school. Chan has performed in the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra on several occasions, including the ‘Bridging the Glorious Dynasties of Ancient China and Hong Kong’ concert in 2016, and  performing a supporting acting role as well as an erhu solo at ‘The Mad Monk and the Eight Immortals’ concert in 2017.
