Assistant Principal
Sheng and instrumental class instructor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, section instructor of the Hong Kong Young Chinese Orchestra, Wei joined the HKCO in 2018 and served as Acting Principal
Sheng in 2021, he has served as Assistant Principal
Sheng since the same year. Wei graduated from the NTUA with a degree in Chinese Music under the tutelage of Jen Yen-Ping and Cheng Chien-Na. He later also benefitted from the coaching of many virtuosi such as Tang Fu, Tang Dazhi, Chen Yi-Wei and Dong Ying.
Wei is a winner of many prizes and accolades: while he was still in high school, he won the first prize with Distinction in the Taiwan Music Competition, was awarded the title ‘The Pride of Taoyuan’ by the City of Taoyuan, and was invited to appear in an interview on the education radio of Taiwan; other prizes include ‘Budding Artist of the NTCH Taipei’, and the Gold Award in both categories of sheng and keyed sheng in the 2016 ‘HongFuBei’ International Art Festival – Chinese Sheng, held in Beijing, China.
In September 2023, Wei has invited to perform in the Hong Kong premiere of
A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. In December 2022, he performed the sheng solo in the Symphonic Poem
The Peacock at ‘A Night of Concerti’ concert of HKCO. In April 2021, he was invited to perform in the concerto
Winter Hunt and a
sheng solo
Jin Melody at the live streamed concert, ‘Improvise!’, jointly organised by Hong Kong Baptist University and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). It was followed by the HKBU Symphony Orchestra Concert in July the same year where he gave the world premiere of the
sheng concerto
– symphony version.
Wei has garnered a lot of performing experience as he has shared the concert stage with various orchestras in Taiwan. In 2015, he was selected as one of the International Youth Ambassadors to go with the Taiwan delegation on tour to Edinburgh, Ireland, Portugal and República Democrática de São Tomé e Príncipe, serving as instrumentalist, recording engineer and performer in dance dramas. He was one of the selected musicians to represent Taiwan in overseas performances in Europe and Africa and to conduct exchange with the local senior officials, winning acclaim for his excellent work.
